Project Progress: Presenting my game

I can finally say that I have done the game and it is uploaded. I really enjoyed this course, especially the project tasks because it is the only task that I can enjoy myself in while designing a 2D game rather than researching and writing. My game is about a red hooded girl that is in the middle of the forest at night by herself. She is looking for some help but no one is around except some monsters that look like a wood from the tree. She discovered that she has a super power, which is throwing explosives; therefore, she used her power and started throwing explosives at them till they are all dead and she is safe now. The game is so simple and not complicated at all because when I try to add more codes and make it complicated, a lot of issues occur and it is hard to figure out the problem, so I try to make it as simple to enjoy it. I found it easy to design it because I followed a tutorial that helped with designing my game and writing the code. To play, press on the left and right arrow keys, the space bar to jump, and the ctrl button to throw explosives at the enemies. While designing the game, I struggled a bit with some errors that came across while coding and designing it in unity but I fixed every error at the end. After I finished designing the game and made sure that it works fine, I created a new project on itch.io and uploaded the game folder that I built from unity to itch.io. I built it as a web GL as well for anyone to play it online but when I tried uploading it to itch.io it was not working so I just uploaded the downloadable version. I am happy with what I have done and I hope that everyone who plays the game will enjoy it.

Reading 12

In this week, which is the last week of this course, we are going to launch the book that includes all of our chapters and reflect on our process from the start of researching, choosing our groups, and brainstorming ideas to write about till actually adding our chapter and publishing the book. When I first heard the that we are having a reading task, I though it was just reading and reflecting on an article but when I started reading what we are actually supposed to do, I was in shock and really confused. The first couple of weeks were the hardest and I was in confusion the whole time and did not know what was I doing for the first few weeks but then when we started researching academic sites from google scholar and then writing our chapter through steps that were mentioned in the videos provided in every week's tasks, I was not confused anymore. I started understanding what we are supposed to do and my writing skills were getting better every week till I finished my chapter and modified it after some feedbacks. I am happy with my chapter and what I achieved in this course. I learnt a lot in this course from researching skills to writing skills.

Reading 11

In this week's reading task, I added my chapter and then started reading it again just to make sure that there are not anything I missed or forgot to add. I also read other people's comments on my chapter and changed anything that was needed to be changed then I started creating my visuals for the chapter and added them to the document. I am so happy with what I have done and that my chapter will be included in the this year's book. At the beginning of the semester, I was really confused on what should be done exactly and with all these steps it was really complicated but once I started getting the hang of it. I started understanding everything and writing my chapter was easy. I wrote my chapter in a very simple way so that everyone can understand it easily and not feel confused I feel like I am proud of myself with what I have achieved till now and can not wait for the book to be published. I hope everyone's chapters are good as well and that the book will be successful like the last year and everyone will enjoy reading it without being bored.

Project Progress: Alpha and Beta testing and refinement

In this week's project task, we were assigned to continue working on the game and get it done during the easter break to present our game on week 12. Last week, I worked a little bit on my game by adding the projectiles that are thrown at the enemies. I got it from the asset store for free like the characters, including the main character and the enemy. The nature I added as the ground and the block are also free from the asset store. I started creating scripts for the enemy, main character, the projectiles and the health bar for the enemies. This week, I added the enemy to the game scene and placed it in front of the red hooded girl so that when the game starts, the red hooded girl throws the projectiles at the enemy and the enemy can die. I also made the enemy die after five hits from the explosives and the health bar was added on top of the enemy so that when the main character starts throwing explosives at the enemy, the health bar will appear to know when the enemy is going to die. This game is easy to create but I struggled a bit while writing the code in the enemy and health bar scripts because some code weren't right but then I figured out what was wrong and fixed it. I still have one more error, which I do not get but it does not affect my game so I think I will just leave it. For next week, I will be adding the final things I need to finish the game with some final touches so that I can present my game early and not leave it till the last minute. I hope that the game turns out as I want it to be and that anyone who plays it, enjoys it.

Reading 10

In this week's reading task, we are assigned to start adding graphics, illustrations, and some figures that are relevant to our chapter. I finished my chapter and got feedback from others that were good; therefore, I started doing my graphics for my chapter. My chapter is about the core game elements of game design and what really is important to consider when designing a game to be successful and enjoyable. It is like chess, you have to know the right move so you can win. I started doing my graphics for the chapter and gathered some pictures from Pinterest that I think looks good with my chapter. I then added them to illustrator and then started adding the name of the chapter. The other figure I have that I took as well from Pinterest, I designed it in my own way. The first figure looks like a forest at night, which I thought suits my chapter. I added the title of my chapter on this picture with a contrasting color. I think this second figure includes different colors of grounds that are on top of each other and I think it looked nice with my chapter so I added the core elements on top of each one to make it look attracting and the audience would like to know more about them. I decided to change my graphics and started searching some on pixels for free photos and I found a chess photo that represents my chapter. The second photo I did it in illustrator, which includes the controller and the title of my chapter.

Project Progress: 1st Playable

In this week's project task, we were assigned to make our first playable, which is after the prototype. Last week, I started doing my first playable by adding the main character, the forest ground, the projectile that the red hooded girl will be shooting at the enemies, and an object so that the projectile would stop when it hits the rock. The game so far includes two scripts, a script for controlling the player and a script for the projectile so it can be shot at the enemies. The projectile was a free asset like everything I have included so far in the project. I added a rigid body to the objects and a 2D collider.

To play the game, you can move the character left or right using the arrow keys, jump using the space bar, and shoot using the control key. I struggled at first in starting the game and getting the camera to fit the view of the scene and appear in game mode but I finally did it and everything works perfectly so far except for one thing. This one issue I have is that I can shoot at the left side but it does not let me shoot at the right side, which is weird and confusing. I can not figure out why, but I will keep going on till I figure this issue and hopefully I fix it.

For the next few weeks and over the spring break, I will be adding the explosives to shoot at the enemies, the enemies themselves with the health bar on top of each enemy to know when they are going to die, and maybe I will add a nice background that fits the genre of the game like a dark, gloomy background. For the audio, I am thinking of adding music to it but not sure, so I will try it and if it fits I will keep it.

Project Progress

In this week's project task, we are assigned to start with our 2d game and make the first prototype of it. I started with following tutorials on YouTube that will help in creating and designing the game. I imported the assets from the asset store, which were free to use. I had the nature asset to create the ground for the characters and different characters that I will use for the main character as the red hooded girl and the enemies that the girl will be fighting and throwing explosives at them. I started duplicating the forest ground to make them align together and in a straight line. For the characters, I just added the main character, which is the red hooded girl. I then created a script for the protagonist and started adding some codes to make it move left and right using the arrow keys and also code to be able to jump using the space bar so that whenever there is an enemy behind a rock or an obstacle, you can jump to reach him and throw the explosives.

The next step is to start adding the enemies with their health bars that will appear on top of them while shooting explosives at them so as to know when they are going to die. The other thing I will be adding is the explosives that the protagonist will throw at the enemies with sound effects.

I am really feeling happy about this game and more confident than the last semester because 2d is way easier and straightforward than the 3d game that we had to do last semester, so hopefully this turns out as I am imagining it and everyone can enjoy playing it after it is published. Here's the game so far, I did not do as much like I mentioned above but I will be adding characters and objects for next week's task.

Tech Task: Einstein Generator

Reading 09

For this week, we are assigned to review our triads chapters and then start working on our own chapters after the feedback we get from our peers. I have wrote my chapter and added all the bibliographies that I used for the chapter. I made sure they are reliable and trustworthy because I got them google scholar. I wrote my chapter following the steps I have learnt through out the weeks from the beginning of the semester till now. I struggled a little bit but then it got easier and all those weeks of researching and gathering sources made it easier to write my chapter. The chapter is about the core elements of game design, which is basically the main elements that should be included when designing a game that will make it interactive, challenging, fun, and successful. I have read the other chapters from my triad and I found them interesting and really good pieces. They were about the aesthetics and how games are mainly designed for boys, that more females should play them and not feel that they aren't any better than boys playing them, and women should be represented more in the game industry including the characters as well. I provided comments and gave feedbacks for them that I hope might help in making their chapter better.

Reading 08

In this week's reading task, there were three videos provided for us to watch talking about how to write an introduction and a conclusion. They were very useful and beneficial. The videos were talking about how much it is important to have a good introduction and a conclusion that include a thesis statement, a sentence that attract the readers to read and be interested in your topic while researching for your topics and chapters. It is also important to include supporting sentences from academic resources that are reliable like google scholar. In your intro, you need to write about your topic generally but then in your conclusion, summarize your topic and what you talked about in your body paragraphs but in other words and straight to the point without adding examples or details because all that goes into the body paragraphs; therefore, the most important thing for your research is the introduction and the conclusion. This is because it is when the readers determine whether or not they are going to either skim through  the text or read the piece carefully. A writers aim is to keep the information digestible so the reader chooses the latter; however, if the piece was complicated and they didn't achieve that aim, the readers will get bored.

Project Progress

This week, I am going to explain in details my project and what is it exactly about. I liked how the 2d ruby game was done and I think it helped a lot with coming up with the idea of my 2d game; however, it is somehow complicated and I don not think I will be having all these elements and objects in my game that I will be designing. My game is simple and clear. It is called "The Exploding Forest" and it is similar to "Raft Wars".

There will be a character wearing a hood in a forest and enemies will start appearing one by one. The hooded girl has to shoot at them explosives till they die to win. The girl can move left and right using the control keys and can jump using the space bar because there will be an enemy behind a rock so the girl needs to jump to be able to shoot him. The enemy has a health bar above him and while shooting at them you can see how much health the enemy has left till you can kill them and die. I hope the game is challenging and fun as I am imagining it to be. There are really simple tutorials I found that will help in designing the game in unity.

Attacking and shooting games are challenging and fun to play. These kind of games create interactions with the players. The game must be interactive and enjoyable. When I started thinking about my idea for the 2d game, I thought about what are the elements that will make the game challenging, fun, and interactive through the design, characters, and theme. The game is simple and straightforward but hopefully it is enjoyable and it turns out the way I imagined it.

This is my game design document if you want to check it out and see what my game is really about.
